To whom it may concern,
I checked out your web page and at first glance, I
was
impressed at the fact that you understood that it is the telemarketing
agencies
that you should lobby against. After further investigation, I have now
come
to realize that you are not only against the agencies, but also
the
individual telemarketers. This is very upsetting and
disappointing to me, because I am a telemarketer.
This is not something
that I am proud of but, it is the only job I can hold at this time. I
was
in a car accident that was not my fault that left my back muscles
damaged.
I need the money to pay the bills so, here I am at the job I thought I
would
never do...telemarketing. I try to be as courteous as possible, even
when
people are rude, cuss, and scream at me.
But, groups that encourage
anger and evil against me really upset me. At this point in my life
(age
19), I am stuck at this job. If your group happens to have any other
suggestions
for me I'll be more than willing to listen. Otherwise, I wish that you
would
back down a bit and realize that there are REAL PEOPLE on the other end
of
the line.
Thank you for your attention
to this matter, Stacey
.

Stacey,
If you got the impression
that we're against the telemarketers themselves, it is an impression we
did not intend to project. I personally cannot remember an occasion
when
I got upset with a telemarketer, yet I would be upset with a
telemarketer's
call. The distinction is perhaps obscure; but important.
If you read our
Fun with Telemarketers
page
you may have concluded that Private Citizen was against
telemarketers as people. That page was included to help people
trivialize
the anger they experienced when their family's privacy is invaded by
unwelcome
junk callers.
Please understand that,
in my view, there is a sort of civil war being waged within the USA.
This
country is imperialistic. Just ask native Americans, central
Americans,
african Americans, or the Vietnamese. But now, as capitalism expands,
the
world is becoming one economic village and we've been declared the
defacto
winner.
Left without other
lands to subjugate, we are turning our imperialism inward... directing
it
against ourselves; invading our own homes. The combatants are
'The
People' vs. Capitalizm. The weapon used against us is our own
legislative
process. It's its been bought and turned against us by Big
Business.
That is why we have no effective laws that would protect us from, what
the
majority of Americans consider, the most reviled of marketing methods.
The war, like always,
is about money. But this time the battleground is our own residences.
And
the freedom at stake is our right to be left alone at home. Of course,
when
a soldier invades a home, the immediate reaction of the resident is to
attack
the soldier; not the Commander who ordered the invasion. Our '

As for
your situation... Now would be a good time to go back to school.
Thank
you for your letter, and good luck to you.
