Here was my approach to eliminating this crap from my (snail)mailbox:

For $30.00 I joined "Private Citizen." They sent a letter on my
behalf to most of the telemarketing and junk mail firms telling them
to cease and desist (which they are then required by US law to do).
Apparently, enough of their members are rather litiguous, so much so
that the junk phone/mail people are scared to death of them. My junk
mail plumeted to almost nothing, and I have gotten one soliciting phone
call since (from the Chicago Tribune, which I will now no longer
purchase). I did this after reaching the breaking point when, after
moving to a new apartment for a better view, I was suddenly inundated
as many as six junk phone calls in an evening.

regards,

jean.
